Port Canaveral, FL – With a ceremonial ribbon cutting, Port Canaveral officially opened the highly anticipated expanded parking lot at the Cove on the Port’s south side. The approximate 160,000 square foot newly paved lot, located between Glen Cheek Drive and Mullet Road, boasts an additional 337 parking spaces, an approximate 150% increase from the original 225 parking spots. Construction began in August 2017 and was completed in February 2018, more than two months ahead of schedule at a total cost of $1.22 million.
“The Cove parking lot project is in direct response to the growing needs of restaurants and businesses at the Port,” stated Captain John Murray, Port CEO. “Our commitment to improve and expand our infrastructure allows the businesses at the Cove to deliver an exceptional customer experience and increased business opportunities in our community.”
The parking lot features eight additional accessible parking spaces with two ramps for easy access to the street. The entire lot is outfitted with hi-tech security lighting and cameras. Outdoor lighting at Port Canaveral feature energy efficient “turtle-friendly lighting,” designed to protect sea turtles from the adverse effects of artificial lights.
“The businesses spoke and we listened,” said Canaveral Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Wayne Justice. “Their success is our success. The Port is fully committed to meeting the infrastructure needs and contributing to the vitality of the Cove’s businesses, with the goal of delivering the best experience possible to our customers.”
