Keeping Air and Water Clean
for Healthy Living and Good Business
Nothing is more basic or more important than clean air and water. For the protection of the people and animals within our Port and maintenance of our water quality, it is unlawful to:
- Put any organic or inorganic matter into the waters of Port Canaveral that may cause a nuisance, sanitary nuisance or water pollution.
- Discharge into the waters or leave in an area from which it can be accidentally discharged, any solid waste.
- Discharge domestic sewage and hazardous or industrial waste into stormwater sewers.
To keep domestic sewage out of Port waters, marinas, yacht clubs and other facilities that permit dockage of liveaboard vessels must be equipped with an approved vessel pumpout system for emptying domestic sewage holding tanks and must keep records of the use of that system by all docked liveaboards. Commercial vessels docked in Port Canaveral must use approved vessel pumpout systems for domestic waste or discharge that waste outside the four-nautical-mile limit.
For protection of our air quality, it is unlawful to:
- Emit contaminants into the air that may injure property or human, plant or animal life, or that interfere with the conduct of business or comfortable enjoyment of life or property.
- Disturb the topsoil or remove ground cover on Port property and leave that property unused or undeveloped without taking precautions to prevent dust pollution.
- Handle or store materials in a manner that generates dust.
- Light outdoor fires within the Port Canaveral limits (not including small outdoor fires for social purposes contained in barbeques, fireplaces, firepits, etc. or the small contained flames of torches, incense burners, insect pots, flares and smokeless waste gas burners).
Reasonable precautions to prevent dust pollution from cleared ground include sweeping, sprinkling, seeding, compacting, enclosure, chemical or asphalt sealing and use of wind screens.
To reduce dust from materials handling, vehicles carrying bulk materials which could create dust pollution are required to maintain 6 inches of freeboard above their loads; apply water and/or dust suppressants to these materials; or use tarps or other cargo covers to prevent materials from blowing into the air. Materials tracked onto roadways should be cleaned up as quickly and safely as possible.
