Protecting Our Imperiled Species and Wildlife Habitats

The land and waters in and around our Port are the habitat of a broad variety of wildlife, including a number of "imperiled" species (includes species designated as endangered, threatened and of concern). In its guardianship role, the Canaveral Port Authority works to maintain the environmental, aesthetic and recreational values of our natural habitats and ecological systems, such as tropical hardwood hammocks, palm hammocks, virgin longleaf pine forests and wetlands.

We also have programs that focus on our imperiled species – right whales, manatees, sea turtles, gopher tortoises and threatened and endangered bird species. Click here to read more about these species and programs.

For the protection of our wildlife and their habitats, it is unlawful for anyone on Port property to:
- Catch, molest, injure, kill, annoy or otherwise interfere with the normal activity or well-being of manatees, mammalian dolphins, marine turtles or any animal listed by the federal or state government as imperiled.
- Import, transport or release exotic plants and animals that are prohibited by state law.
- Leave any exterior lights on that are not essential for safety or security between sunset and sunrise during sea turtle nesting season, May 1 through October 1.
